Allium cernuum (Nodding Onion) 100 Mile

Allium cernuumDescription: H30-40cm W30cm (clumps); pink nodding umbels; summer

Natural Habitat: Full sun, well-drained rocky areas with average soils; Prairie

Where to Use: Rock garden, Prairie, Meadow, Perennial border, Deep containers; Seed heads are ornamental after blooms

Combinations: Coreopsis (Tickseed), Sisyrinchium (Blue-eyed Grass), Antennaria (Pussytoes), Rudbeckia, Gaillardia (Blanket Flower), Pycnanthemum (Mountain Mint), Zizia (Golden Alexanders)


Amsonia jonesii (Jones' Bluestar)  Colorado/Utah

Description: H30cm. This species is native to dry, sandy soils of the American southwest, but is hardy to Zone 5.  Light blue flowers appear in spring. 

Where to Use: Sun; Grow in the Rock Garden or Troughs with very well-drained soil.  The plant may be slow to start, but it eventually becomes a semi-shrubby plant with good fall colour. Hardy to Zone 4

Anemon carolinianaDescription: H30cm, White/pink/purple flowers in early spring.  The plants grow from a tuberous root that create small colonies.  Native to the midwestern prairies in dry/well-drained soils. 

Where to Use: Sun; Rock garden, Prairie garden with well-drained sandy/rocky soil.  Hardy to Zone 4.

Description: H40-60cm; yellow; spring

Where to Use: Sun; Well drained soils; Spring bulb that multiplies easily; Foliage dies back in summer

Lilium pumilum (Coral Lily)

Lillium pumilumDescription: H60-70cm. Shiny, bright red, reflexed flowers on stalks of thin grass-like leaves. The flowers are smaller than other lilies but stand out with their brilliant colour. They are native to Northern China and bloom in late spring. Hardy to Zone 4.

Where to Use: Sun/Part sun in well-drained soils. Add coarse sand or gravel to planting mix. Rock garden, Perennial border, Containers. Allow to self sow to preserve clumps ? matures to bloom size quickly. Good fragrance.




Lychnis alpina (Alpine Lychnis)

Description:  Tufts of fine foliage topped by 10cm pink clusters.  Native to the Pyrenees.  For Rock Garden or trough with well-drained soil.  Hardy to Zone 5Blooms in late spring.

Where to use:  Well-drained coils in rock gardens

(Narrow-leaf Penstemon)   N. Dakota to New Mexico

Description: H35cm; pastel pink/blue over blue-green foliage ; late spring

Where to Use:  Sun; Rock garden in very well drained soils; dry gardens; protect from winter wet; Hardy to Zone 4/5





Penstemon confertus (Yellow Penstemon) Western N.A.

Penstemon confertusDescription: H30-50cm. Spikes of whorled, pale yellow flowers. Native to the southern Canadian Rockies and growing in low to subalpine meadows. Forms a mat or clump. Hardy to Zone 4. Blooms late spring to early summer

Where to Use: Sun/Part shade. Good to average soil, but well-drained. Meadow, Rock garden, Perennial border

Where to Use: Part sun. Average soils but well drained especially in winter (add coarse sand or gravel to planting mix). Rock garden, Perennial border.
